Emergencies

Update: From 14th February 2022 there will be a change to the out of hours service we provide.

Our Out of Hours Provision

Every Veterinary Practice is obligated to either provide or make arrangements for another veterinary business to handle their OOH calls.

To ensure that we can continue to provide the highest level of care to all our patients, 365 days of the year, we have decided that we will now be using a dedicated emergency service, Somerset Veterinary Emergency Clinic (SVEC) to provide our overnight emergency cover.

Somerset Veterinary Emergency Clinic (SVEC) is an emergency clinic based at the Quantock Veterinary Hospital, The Drove, Bridgwater TA6 4BA.

This company provides a specialised emergency care service with a dedicated night team of vets, nurses and support staff on site all night.

Our clinical team at Axe Valley will continue to take emergency calls every day between 8am and 7pm and provide care for any hospitalised patients staying with us overnight at our main surgery, Axe Valley Vets, Blackford, BS28 4NG.

If you need assistance when we are closed, please continue to call us on the normal number for the surgery you attend. Between the hours of 7pm and 8am, your call will be forwarded directly to the team at Somerset Veterinary Emergency Clinic (SVEC).

Please note there will be no changes to our current daytime service, this remains the same.

Costs

Consultation - Out of Hours £245
Nursing call out fee in addition if needed £121
Unregistered or Inactive pet surcharge £100

All other procedures and medications will be at an additional cost.

Home visits are rarely appropriate OOH as so little can be achieved for your pet. Please do not be offended that we insist that whenever possible animals are brought in to the surgery at Blackford.

This service is designed as an additional service for our Registered Active Pets (i.e. animals presented annually for health checks and vaccinations or on regular medication and under our care). We reserve the right to enforce the surcharge. If you are registered at another practice we will direct you back to their service, however if you are unable to contact your usual vets we will always act in the best interests of your pets.
